The only reason why we put ourselves down, is because we are seeking reassurance from an individual. We are looking to be told that whatever we put down about ourselves, someone will disagree.

Example:

"I am so fat." The person that says that might me 6'0 and 100lbs but they are looking for someone to tell them "No your not your beautiful".

Its a crock.

Well we wish we did not put ourselves down, but probably do because we either lack the confidence and/or self esteem. But if one was in a bad relationship where the person was constantly putting them down they manage to install tapes in someones head that automatically start running. Or maybe while one grew up their parents tend to always say things that made them feel like they were never good enough. If you are someone that does this and would like to stop. You have to really set your mind to changing those tapes that keep running. You have to really realize all the good things about yourself and what you like about your self. Then stand in front of the mirror every morning and evening and tell yourself things like" I like myself and I am a good person". "I am beautiful and people like me" Or any other affirmation you can make for yourself and no matter how hard it is you have to say it over and over again. It will become easier and you will see your attitude about yourself change. If you hang out with people who make you feel bad about yourself you need to distance yourself from these people until you can change the feelings and they will change for the people around you also. I have been working on this myself for years and although I still do it alot and can say I like myself a lot better now and am not depending on others to like me first.

We are most critical of ourselves.

because we are our own worse critic... its human nature... but would we let someone else say to us what we sometimes say to ourselves? probably not.... think about that next time your accusing yourself as being a loser/reject etc

low self esteem, peer pressure, altered brain chemistry leading to depression, and some types of upbringing.

But then again what would a stupid idiot like myself know... :P
