GOOD QUESTION. And you have some good answers already. I have had 4 children and I can tell you that a lot of what the books tell you to bring is baloney. It's usually way too much. Here are my essentials:
Lip balm for SURE. They will likely limit your water intake to ice chips, especially if it's your first. The candy suggestion was a good one but many times they will take that away too, depending on your situation. Your lips will be a mess.
Lotion for your hands & feet because that recycled hospital air is terribly dry.
Clothing for you to wear home (maternity pants will still be the most comfy because you will still look & feel pregnant) and slip on shoes so you don't have to bend over.
Slippers or flip flops for walking to the toilet or up and down the halls while in labor.
Toothbrush and toothpaste! If you forget that they will sometimes charge you extra if you ask for a replacement one.
Hairbrush for you (and hair bands if your hair is long because it will annoy you during labor), deoderant, soap and shampoo for afterward if you don't want to use theirs.
Simple clothing for baby to wear home like a zip up pajama or something similar. Newborns can be hard to dress! I never believed the ultrasound 100% so I always brought a unisex outift too just in case.
Proper outerwear for baby if it's cold or other bad weather.
Most hospitals will load you down with samples of diapers and creams and formula and all for the baby, so I would pack the diaper bag quite lightly and even bring a small diaper bag if you have one instead of the giant one. Many hospitals even give you that.
With my 3rd and 4th babies I brought something special to put in with them for their first photo, that is sometimes nice when you look back at that photo on your wall later. I used a blanket that was handmade by an aunt.

If you or baby have special needs or surgical concerns, etc. you will have a couple of days to be sure someone brings you anything else you forgot or didn't know you'd need.

You will need a car seat when you check out - most hospitals won't release baby otherwise.

Also, call to see about taking a tour of your hospital's maternity ward (mine always provided one). Bring a notebook and write down anything that occurs to you while you're there. You can even ask them what most women forget.

And the camera for sure! Make sure someone else is in charge of it because you will probably forget.

Congratulations! What a blessing.

I'd pack your basic essensials.. shampoo, soap, deoderant, toothbrush, toothpaste. I brought a robe from my own home, but didn't use it since it would have only gotten messy. I'd leave out things like baby announcements, puzzles.. reading materials. You'll likely spend a great amount of time with your baby and getting to know him/her. Bring something to leave the hospital in: A chage of clothes, baby's first outfit. Don't overpack because alot of the things they tell you to bring in those baby books the hospital will provide for you. (even the shampoo, deodorant, baby diapers..etc).

I never got to prepare for the hosp since mine came a month early, so I had to have my poor hubby searching the house for everything!! I had him bring me shampoo, cond., toothbrush, toothpaste, robe, slippers, a hand held solitaire game, bring the baby something to wear home, don't worry about diapers and all that, the hosp should give you a bunch of stuff to take home, or they did for me anyways. a camera for sure, you can never have enough pictures, and make sure you have extra room for the stuff the hosp gives you and any gifts you get while you are there.

The best thing I ever packed was my favorite cup. I had one that I just LOVED to drink out of - a insulated cup with very odd sequins between the plastic parts. It made me drink more than I would have with those plastic cups at the hospital. Those always cut my lip.

Take your own Kleenex if you use them - nothing irritates like cheap tissues!

I also took my own pillow.

Loads of blessings to you and your FAMILY!

I followed the list in What to Expect When You're Expecting and did well. What I wish someone had told me is don't expect to fit right back in your prepregnancy size jeans. Take something loose (I took a maternity outfit the second and third time) to wear home. Other than that, you are set to go.

You are not allowed to eat or drink so I would suggest taking some lollie pops or pop sickles for while you are in labor. I got very thirsty and they seemed to help me.

no, i took too much junk. you might want to take a preloaded cheap camera to take photos when you get the baby to yourself, other than that, something for you to wear home, something for baby to wear home, front opening nightie if you are nursing, and slippers. thats about it.
