In the context of administering computer systems, defragmentation (or defragging) is a process that reduces the amount of fragmentation in file systems. It does this by physically reorganizing the contents of the disk in order to store the pieces of each file close together and in order (contiguously). It also attempts to create larger regions of free space using compaction to impede the return of fragmentation. Some defragmenters also try to keep smaller files within a single directory together, as they are often accessed in sequence.

OK....Well when you install software the information in spread out on the hard drive including all internet information. Pictures everything. Well what defragtion does is organios all the information and put it all close together on the hard drive, so the hard drive doesn't have to move back in forrth so much to read the files that are on it. Once defragtion is complere file are close to together there for allowing the hard drive to read faster and stay up too speed and make your computer run faster. Well..I hope this answered your question.

when u save anything in yo computer data will be stuffed anywhere on the sectors. so defragmentation is putting data into one area that for it to be scattered everywhere ,so this process speeds up the harddrive seek time.
