For example, a 1973 Caprice & Impala looks like the exact same car. Whats the difference?

If someone would do the research, they will see that in fact the Caprice was more of an upscale vehicle than the Impala. The chrome scheme was better, the interior was more elegant with better options such as seat configurations, and the dash had the wood grain, nicer steering wheel, etc; In other words the Caprice was the Continental of the Lincoln. Many Caprice's had a more powerful engine, as in a small block 400 that would make it get down the road. Side beside they tend to look a lot alike, but once you really looked good, it was easy to see the difference. I had a 72 Caprice, and I also owned several Impala's in my time. They were both fine vehicles by anybodies standard.
Glad to help you, Good luck!!!

The Caprice has a lower trim level. The Impala has a few minor details that the Caprice doesn't have like better seats and door trim. The bodies were all the same even through the early 90s. Of course today since they no longer make the Caprice and they have rejuvenated the Impala.......the Impala now is a small front wheel drive car where a Caprice has never been small or front wheel drive.

The Caprice used to be the "top of the line" and came with more standard features that were options on the Impala. Same basic car, but quieter and more luxo with better ride and better interior appointments.

Trim level with the Caprice being the more upscale model.

Cost as well as a few minor details that the other car doesn't have. These difference are usually cosmetic. There might be a difference in the available engine, rear axle, suspension, or the transmission. They are still going to be small, but a difference any way.
