What made this peanuts grower a US President is probably his smile and his optimism, his belief that there is always a solution to the problems. His new book about the Middle East is another act of courage in a world of fanatism on both sides.
In short term politics with strength in power he is wrong, of course. In the Israel-supporting media he is even considered as the worst ex-President. In the long term he may be right if there is a peaceful solution available.
Or he may be fully wrong if there are really no solutions, if the survival of two different cultures one next to the other is impossible and if technology is only used to dominate instead of to exchange.
What do you think ?

I think Carter needs to stick to Habitat for Humanity and stay out of other countries' affairs.

I have never heard anyone in the media refer to him as the worst former President. Don't know where you're getting that from. He is actually rather well respected. His Carter center has worked on Peace initiatives, human rights and fair election monitoring worldwide for years. He got the Nobel Peace prize for it, for heavens sake! Does that sound like a loser to YOU?
He got Egypt and Israel a peace treaty, which amazingly enough has stood the test of time.

I think Jimmy Carter is a great "ex-president". He is a much better ex-president than he was president.

He is an accomplished man. A Naval Officer, independent business man, and I would say the most Christian President that we had in the second half of the 20th Century (that is not to say he was the most successful).

He is articulate, intelligent, thoughtful, compassionate, and ,as you say optimistic. I think he can only be a positive force in the Middle East.

Many former leaders of this u . s . a . dropped the ball optimum us to the "new Vietnam" we are waging a warfare that we are able to not win. after we go away the total u . s . a . will flow decrease back to the stone age way of engaging in existence. we are only dropping money and lives being there, and all of us understand...gas expenditures is totally not less than $2.00 back. i guess that's time for the U. S. to stop finding out to purchase tanker truck SUV's and initiate to be a touch better conscientious of our ecosystem as we save on the pump.

Don't you wonder why many of his current top advisers have resigned in protest of this book? They are saying it is full of lies and half truths. Whatever happened to the unspoken agreement that former presidents do not criticize current presidents. He was the worst president in modern times. Are you not old enough to remember the Iranian hostages? energy shortages? I agree with the person who says he should stick to Habitat for Humanity and keep his nose out of things that are really out of his league.

I think Jimmy Carter used to be a sweet, simple man from Georgia. Now he's just a blithering idiot of liberalism and does much more harm than good. Good man, horrible President, even more horrible ex-President.

he gets blamed for things he didn't do. the bad economy, inflation, unemployment and oil problems came from ford who got them from nixon. the hostage thing was reagan undermining a president and playing politics with american hostages. if we had listened to carter,we wouldn't be in the war we are in now. independence from foriegn oil and alternate energy sources are still good ideas today. amnesty just took fords pardons step further. i hated him at one time, but i grew up and educated myself about it.

History will frown even more on Carter after more time passes. What does he want to be remembered for? I'm not even sure.
