It is NOT illegal for the owner to modify his own car. However, it probably won't pass required testing if it is mandated for where you live. On the other hand, it IS illegal for a shop to do it. Last I heard it was a $10,000 fine and 6 months in jail for a mechanic that does it.

none--there is no year that it can be removed legally if it is a full use car. In many states there is a law that if the car is older than 15 years old and that you have collector type insurance that limits the yearly mileage, it is not your sole car, and not driven to work--then you are exempt from emmissions testing.

You can't...bought a '77 ford pinto with a catalytic converter and it was illegal then to remove it...even though at the time, the only state that required it was California and I was in Idaho.


(did it anyway....hehe)

in WV, the exhaust has to be how it came from the factory. if it came with a straitght pipe, when u come in for an inspection, it better have a str8 pipe. if it have 2 cats and a single side exit, it better have that when u get it inspected
