Few months ago my SUV was overheated, turns out that the hose connecting to the coolant tank came loose. The tow driver told me that he can reconnect the hose and put in some water and I can go back on the road again, but I had my SUV towed to the dealer anyway, after I got it back it drives just fine for the past 3 months, this past weekend, we went to skiing and the temp reached about 10F at night, after a day of skiing we drove the car to Reno, about 6 miles from our hotel the car broke down, the SUV was telling me that the Coolant level is low and the engine is overheating, I thought the hose came loose again, but when I touch it the hose was rock hard, it seems like the coolant was frozen due to low temp, but I thought the coolant supposed to be antifreeze! When the tow truck drive came he told me that maybe the repair shop just put water instead of the antifreeze. My question is if that is the case, is my SUV’s engine gone be okay (we drove only about 6 to 8 miles)? Thank you.

I would get it checked for damage to the head gasket.

if your engine is running sporadically or puffing antifreeze smelling exhaust out of the exhaust than you did damage...you can also check your engine oil dipstick for water..you will notice the difference right away kinda looks milky,...6-8 miles you might be okay depends on how fast you turned it off when the overheating light came on

You need a new radiator cap.The engine may be ok,and put the correct anti freeze in.Engine could have cracked bloke. You need to have it looked at by a pro.

Engines have freeze plugs to prevent major damage. They must have added only water when you had it fixed the first time.
