I was looking at some of the other answers and this is what I've come up with...

I don't believe a person is born gay, and I don't believe a person is born straight. We are born with the engraved nature to love our mother and breathe and eat. The influences and images that we see along the path of becoming adults shapes our concepts of thought and our sexuality. Just like we are not born with a religion; our families religion later on becomes our religion until we get older and decide whether or not we want to keep it or discover another. I hate that reason for why people choose to be homosexuals.

Secondly, I am not just attracted to females or males. I used to consider myself bisexual until I was involved in a relationship with a transgendered female. I have an attraction to transvestites and unisexuals as well, so I am an omnisexual. "Omnisexuality" does not (despite popular belief) mean that "I'll screw anything that walks" because that's not true. It means that one finds a mutual attration or understanding with another based on their soul and attitudes, not their appearance or state of gender. We choose who we want to love, it's not encoded into our DNA or picked up when we read a book. Gender alone should not stop us from loving another mutually.

What attracts us to any person? I don't think you can know the answer to one, without knowing the answer to the other. Same sex couples, and heterosexual couples are formed over the same things: love, compassion ,comfort, ease, happiness, understanding. I have never actively searched to fall in love with a woman, or a man. It just so happens I am more inclined (pretty much exclusively) to feel strong feelings for women. The people I feel safe with are the ones that attract me the most. I don't trust easily, so to feel safe with someone pretty much guarantees them a place in my heart.

well, with girls, likeing another girl, acually makes a lot of sense!
when a boy and girl get together, the woman has more of a chance to get hurt emotionally than the male, so, when 2 girls are together, they are both emotional to the relationship, ending in mostlikely, harmony!
sooo, for the simple fact that some guys can be heartless, girls turn to other girls!! and same thing with guys, cause some girls can be heartless to! LOL

or the extremly simple fact, that, a girl simply doesnt have an attraction to a male, and vice versa! OK? LOL

I don't know. I just read an interesting article about pheremones..according to the article we are attracted by smell to other people far more than we realize...and that people will end up with people of similar pheremonal odours or something...an interesting theory but I don't think that it is the definitive answer.

Same thing that attracts straight people to the opposite one. Our sex drive.

i assume when you say gender you are mostly referring to bioligical sex (male or female) vs gender characteristics (masculine or feminine)

i think characteristics of attraction and sexual orientation are mutually exclusive for some..

other will site the same things.. i am bi, and i tend base my judgement of attraction based on the same things for both sexes..

in my case, i like people who possess femine personalities, emotional, sensitive, and overall girly.. looks are not important to me.. but being healthy is nice.. i also tend to look for people who can relate to me in some way, either we share a similar experience (or lack of experience) or we have gone thru similar emotional problems, such as depression..

i believe my bisexuality comes from my rejection of the gender roles society has invented. for me, love is love, respect is respect, trust is trust, emotional intimacy is emotional intimacy.. if you can show me these characteristics, i will like you, and potentially learn to love you, which will eventually mean i will desire sex with you.... your biological genitals really don't matter to me.. genitals only make up a small part of a person.

if your question was more along the lines of gender and gender roles, i think it's a matter of personal tastes based on values we create based on the nurturing we receive, and our perception of society (most people fall to the brainwashing that men are supposed to act masculine and women are supposed to act femine... society also tells us that opposites should attract..

but people who are transgendered in belief (they reject the gender role they are supposed to have, well these people may tend to be more attracted to same gendered people. the concept of transexual opens up an entire other can of worms. but sexuality may also play a role, but some gay men will say they like masculine men, others will say they like femine men.. others will say they like both.. same for lesbians..

well, that's my take on all of this. but i'm certainly no expert.. i just recently accepted the reality of my bisexuality and my designation as a transgenderist..
