We are going to Indonesia for 7 days in the first week of Februrary.

We'll fly into Bali and of course stay a couple of days there, but then we'd like to kick back on a non-commercialized, quiet beach island which is easy enough to get to but is not crowded with backpackers.

Our activities on the island will mostly be laying around on the beach (an empty beach is better than a crowded one). We're not crazy about water sports but we like markets, temples, mosques, local culture, scenic spots etc. And we love food :)

Please recommend an island, and if you know of nice accomodation, please provide the details. Thanks!

Gili islands in Lombok would be a perfect place for you. It's not far away from Bali. Better you go to Lombok by aeroplane and then use public transport or rent a car to get to Gili Islands. I think you will find a nice accomodation in Gili islands. You can spent 1-2 days in Gili islands, then move and stay in Senggigi beach area, if you wanna travel around Lombok and see a local culture. Lombok is famous with its pearl craft.
Try Alang-Alang hotel in Senggigi..it's nice one..

Lombok!

Try one of the 3 Gili Islands! or all of them!

the water is blue, you can sun bath without people bugging you to buy this and that, perfect for snorkling and diving

its just nice there

my husband and I spent a week there and it wasnt enough.

Bali is too crowded, too touristique, too noisy, and not that clean

Bunaken is the next place you gotta go for snorkling and such its beautiful there!

my suggestion if you go to Lombok, stay at the Holiday Inn Senggigi. It's just the best!

you can go to bangka island - there is one resort called Parai Beach and Spa resort. The hotel is just a resort and private, one houses to one houses, and its not bad, they even have a private house with a private swiming pool etc.

it just 30 mins from the airport

the last time i went there, there is one or 3 backpackers around the hotel, since bangka island is too deserted and quite far from bali, but you can look for domestic flight to reach there.

(sriwijaya airlines is one of local domestic airlines that provide the flight to go to bangka islans)

it just another place like bali in indonesia. and its so much cheaper. everything is all arround there. the seafood, is just so fantastic, and its famous in indonesia, bangka food, thats how they call it. dont forget to try bangka pork noodle.

temples is not so much there, it just a small old temples arround the island. you can find sumthing which is already dead in your country since you are young, like the ironing metal, the plastic toys, and it just vintage.

and they also believe in fortune telling, and they telling absoultely right. just make sure you bring anyone that understand bangka language or indonesian language, to translate.

you can go to the bar arround the pasir putih (white sands), there is a lot of bar and entertainment arround those area.

(well, may be one day I'll get back there. uh, I miss the beach... )

I truly ought to giggle at different solutions. The question is "unspoilt" and "quiet" so truly how Kos, Rhodes and Santorini will be defined as such is previous me. they are neither of those products. As somebody else has already reported, you want to bypass to the smaller islands - yet do no longer ignore that all of them can get very busy in the severe season (August truly, even as 1/2 of Italy descends on us). i'd advise the smaller Ionian islands of Paxos, Antipaxos and Ithaca; or the most easterly of the Sporades, Alonissos; or my neck of the woods, the northern end of the Dodecanese, Leros, Lipsi, and Patmos. For absolutely the only excellent, you are able to attempt the little islands of Arki or Marathi to the north of Lipsi. Arki is amazingly quiet, yet Marathi has in trouble-free words round a dozen rooms to stay and each and each of the island existence is targeted around the three tavernas stretched alongside the sea coast the front. even as the generator receives grew to grow to be off at evening - that is it !!

I agree with the Gilli islands off of Lombok, Mano being more secluded, but Lovina in northern Bali was nicer. "Gede" home stay was secured. private bungalows for $5. u.s. a day, had a jeep for travel to the waterfalls & a protective Gede & staff to warn you which were the dangerous folks that lurk at every tourist town

well if you still stay in Bali, try "Dream Land". I know it's bit awkward name but it's not a commercial beach. Rural area with very nice native people.

you can try Dreamland Villa at Jimbaran. Not too far from Kuta / airport, nice place to stay, long beach, white sands, clear water, ... (it's a REAL good one, believe me!)
