If a man taking Finasteride wishes to have a child through intercourse with a woman, will it cause birth defects?

They say pregnant women should not handle Finasteride as it would cause deformations in a male fetus. But can her body absorb it through ejaculated sperm and affect the baby in any way? Can sperm itself carry Finasteride with it?

Besides causing temporary and reversible erectile dysfunction in some men....studies have shown that finasteride does not cause birth defeats (in human and animals) unless it is directly taken my the pregnant mother. This is a good website to know all about finasteride and pregnancy (short and sweet). Check it out!

Finasteride inhibits the hormone DHT. That's all it does, there may be trace amounts in men's sperm but considering you're taking a 2mg dose it's nothing to worry about. I did my homework on it before I started taking it (for hair loss) and the studies showing why women shouldn't handle BROKEN tablets was based on absorbtion through the skin of lab animals. Of course most animals used in lab testing are exposed to levels hundreds of times greater than any human will ever be exposed to.

I have only experienced pluses will being on Propecia (Finasteride): more hair and more intense orgasms! It has been a win-win and the long term studies show that I'll probably never have prostate problems.

Well...I tried it and quit. I probably would not waste my time and money on the stuff if I was trying to concieve a child. Why? If you are like me, my semen quantity went down so low that even if the sperm count was still ok, I doubt it would be deliverd in the right amount. Everything seemed normal untill one day, about 4 weeks into using the stuff, I "dried up"....this seems to be common effect. Creeped me out and I decided I did not care THAT much about my hair. I guess if you want my advice, wait till you are done with the baby thing then give it a try.

Patients have received single doses of PROSCAR up to 400 mg and multiple doses of PROSCAR up to 80 mg/day for three months without adverse effects. Until further experience is obtained, no specific treatment for an overdose with PROSCAR can be recommended.
Significant lethality was observed in male and female mice at single oral doses of 1500 mg/m² (500 mg/kg) and in female and male rats at single oral doses of 2360 mg/m² (400 mg/kg) and 5900 mg/m² (1000 mg/kg), respectively.
Side effects: Decreased sexual ability/desire may occur. In some men, this medication can decrease the amount of semen released during sex. This is harmless, but has continued in some men even after stopping treatment. Finasteride may also increase hair growth. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
