Leave it be, it'll come out eventually, move the food away from the area. When it comes out make sure you make it so the cat cannot get back in there. Cats cannot go more than a couple w/o food & it knows that but, if it is scared it will not come out. the best bet is to turn the lights off & shut the door leave tha cat alone & it will come out. If you just work up to it the cat will eventually not be so scarred but it may take a week or more. Don't worry, it's not stuck but if you continue to attempt to extracate it it will be too afraid to move. Leave the food in the room but away from the area.

The cat is not stuck, it came out once.
Cats are very conservative. It will take a month or more for it to become comfortable around you - up to over 3 months.
Leave a litter box nearby, and a source of fresh clean water.
Bring very small amounts of cat food down to the area fairly frequently. Put them in a clean bowl. This critter is probably used to hunting down her own food. and may not recognize dry food.
The rest of the time leave the poor thing alone to become used to the indoor surroundings first, then to the fact the humans are "Food Guy" who are not really a threat.
Move slow, and if the feline retreats - leave the area again.
Keep the light low.
Construct a cave like box with an open door that can make it feel safe. Even a cat carrier with a nice blankie floor and a covering over it. Put it near the area which should be warm and dry.
Meow, and good luck. My advice will work.

First, if you don't already have an electronic set-back thermostat for the furnace, go right out and buy one now. They only cost about $35, and will save you at least that much in the first year. Turn the heat back to at least 66 - 68 during the day, everybody layer up on the clothes, drop it back to 55 - 58 at night, say after 10 or 11, whenever you go to bed. This will save a lot of money. The showers can be managed by simply putting a time limit on them. If everyone showers everyday, they're doing more harm to their bodies than good. Showering too often does nothing more than dry out your skin, causing more problems than a days worth of perperation ever could.

Try sprinkling or dousing some cold water on it, borrowing a pet rmouse or hamster in a cage to tempt it, maybe even wiggling those cat toys that look like a rat or bird by dangling them from a string or yarn. If all fails leave some food near by where it can smell it and leave the house to see if the food is gone when you return. Leave a video camera recording when you leave, if you have one, to see it's reaction. It seems like it is capricious because it has been taken from it's environment. Don't be surprised if it doesn't eat for a few days. Animals also get depression. If this happens it could become weak or malnourished. Next time try to rescue a pet from the humane society. Good Luck!

Just leave the cat alone, it will eventually come out on its own.
If you leave food out there the cat is going to eat it and go back to hide. It might take several days, but if the cat is eating the food just keep on moving the food further and further away from your hot water heater, till eventually you can catch him and block off the area.

Place a trail of food that leads to the upper part of your home and leave the door open till you know it comes up and then shut the door and let him alone until he comes to you.On his own when he is ready he will socialize with you or he will bite you!

Get a squirt gun loaded with turpentine and shoot it in the rectum. You'll hear a whiz as the cat runs by and probably never see the cat again.

Bring in a dog on a leash. Cats are smart enough to move out when need be.
