I wear suits to work at least 3 days a week. I have found that knit tops that are solid colors work well for me. I also wear button-ups, and t-shirts if I'm going more casual. I think many women can pull off a nice camisole as well.
In the winter, a light cashmere sweater works well too.
It's important that the sweater or shirt fit you well and go with the suit. Make sure the sweater is a light knit so it isn't too bulky under the jacket.

If its the traditional type of business suit, a skirt and a jacket, you could try putting a camisole under it. Your arms are covered by the jacket and you dont have any bulkiness to deal with, especially if you consider weight to be a problem. With camisoles though you need to make sure it fits you the way that would best suit you. as in if you a weight consious and thinking of opening your suit anytime during the day maybe you should consider getting a camisole that isnt too snug. As for the whole, soild color thing - it doesn't have to be in my opinion, for example, if you are wearing a black suit, why cant you have a nice pink and white top underneath it, or something green and black? I believe that your stlye says alot about you, and if you can show some creativity while not crossing the boundaries or requirement, that it might actually take you a long way. Especially if the people signing your paycheck notice this.
HOWEVER!! I DO NOT MULTICOLOR AT INTERVIEWS!! keep it black, keep it skirt suit.

I like to wear either fairly conservative button down tops like these because with the right shoes they make a suit look fab:

Or something a little snazzier and more feminine but still professional like this:
