I had them and they hurt a lot, especially in the first week. If you have sensitive teeth, you might need painkillers. After two weeks the pain will probably go away, but then it start again when the dentist adjust the braces. Probably want to avoid eating solid food for a while.
Don't mean to scare you, though, just giving you my own experience. It hurts but worth it. You can have beautiful teeth afterwards.
There are some clear style or colorful braces, but may cost more than the original. Original braces are made of metal, but clear ones probabli made from crystal. Original braces already cost a lot so probably want to stick with that one or you'll end up spending a lot more of your money.

whether or not your braces hurt will probably depend on how sensitive your mouth is. personally, mine hurt like cr*p but i have a really sensative mouth. after a couple of weeks (or months, maybe), u get used to them and its just normal to have metal pushing and pulling ur teeth and constantly poking u. and by "clear style braices", do u mean invisalign? its like braces but its clear and removable and looks like it would hurt a lot less, but i think its also a lot more expensive.

I've had my braces for 3 years, and I'm getting them off in 2 weeks. I'm the 2nd kid in my family to get braces, and I guess you could saw my older sister that had them is a little mellow-dramatic about things, so she overplayed stuff so my mom treated me like a baby when I got mine (which was annoying). She wouldn't let me eat anything except mashed potatoes (ew) because my sister said her mouth hurt "soooooo bad." Mine didn't hurt at all. Just take motrin or whatever painkiller you like about 15 minutes before they start putting the braces on, take more every 8 hours or whatever it says on the box is safe. Same goes for getting them tightened, take motrin before your appointment and you'll be fine.

I have braces, and they're not that bad. When you first get them on, your teeth are sore for a few days so it's hard to chew. When you get the wires tightened your teeth can be sore for a while too. There are clear braces you can get, but they cost more.
