I live in Bridgeport, and I love it here. The South side is great, lower rents, and more of a neighborhood feel. However stay away from streets or neighborhoods with blue flashing lights hanging from atop the street lights, these are high crime areas being monitored by the CPD, and those flashing lights have cameras attached to them for 24hr surveillance.

Yep. When I first moved to Chicago I lived on the North Side (and loved it), moved a few years later to the West Side (and pretty much hated it) and now I live in Hyde Park. I LOVE IT! I could not afford to buy a condo in my old neighborhood, but now I have a vintage 3BR/1BA for under $200K. Way under $200K. I could not do that anywhere else in the city. Granted it needs some help, but the rooms are way spacious and I'm about 3 blocks away from the Lake. I work in the Loop and my commute is shorter from Hyde Park than when I lived closer on the West Side. I'm a block away from 3 express busses that go from "Museum Campus" to 47th Street. I am a SWF & I just turned 40, but I also have a big dog so perhaps the big dog part of things gives me more of an edge.... If you need any help / more advice about Hyde Park let me know.

You could live near the Bridgeport area. It's undergoing transition and a lot of condos and lofts are popping up. If you've got some cash to spend, there are a lot of lofts in the South Loop area, not too far from Soldier Field on Michigan ave. Hyde park is pretty cool, but I'm not so sure about a female living alone; the neighborhood is mixed but at times can be a little dicey. And I've had friends who live in neighborhoods along Damen ave. that seem to be doing OK.

There are plenty of decent neighborhoods on the south side. Hyde Park is very nice, as is the South Loop. Bronzeville is really up and coming, the Pullman neighborhood is very quiet and nice.
As with anywhere, you do have to be smart and careful no matter how safe your neighborhood might seem.

It all depends on the particular neighborhood. People forget the North side has quite a bit of crime too especially rapes near the L stops.
