The slang term pwn (see pronunciation note below), used primarily in the Internet gaming culture, means to soundly defeat an opponent. It is sometimes used for taunting of an in-game enemy, and rubbing in victories. The etymology of the term pwn is believed to be rooted in a typographical error arising from the proximity of the 'p' key to the 'o' key on a standard English keyboard.

Before the term's adoption into the 1337 lexicon, "pwn" was generally perceived as an honest error and pronounced "own." Eventually, as the word took on a life of its own and began to convey a meaning stronger and more specialized than that of "own", its pronunciation began to vary as detailed below.

The term has become ubiquitous in Internet circles and is often used outside of gaming contexts. Its progressive form is "pwning." Its noun form is "pwnage." Its most common use is with the past participle, "pwned" (sometimes spelled "pwnt", "pwnd", or "pwn3d"). An example: "You just got pwned." Appending "zorz" creates a humorous variation of the word, e.g. pwnzorz.

To be "owned" in a game or otherwise is to be miserably defeated by an opponent or an opposing team. However, the term "pwned" is usually used when the loser is humiliated in a fair competition.

It's supposed to be owned. It was on a video game, there was a glitch in it and it came up and said pwned instead of owned when played

Some guy thought it'd be funny to replace the O in all the owns or owneds on his website with a P, to see if it would catch on. Sure enough it did. Some people think it means power-owned, but that's how it really started.

Its a common word for owned, particularly used in online games like Halo 2 or Warcraft. It just means that they killed their opponent or something like that. "Dude, you just got pwned!" would be used if someone killed an opponent, stole his weapons, etc.

owned. It came from a gamer that got too excited when playing an online game and tried to taunt another player and type in "owned" quickly but hit the p instead of o.
