AFI has compiled the 100 best comedies. Their top pick was "Some Like It Hot" starring Jack Lemon, Tony Curtis, and Marilyn Monroe. Others to make the top 10 included "Airplane!" and "Blazing Saddles."
For slapstick comedies, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, and The Three Stooges are your best examples. For word play, the Marx Brothers are the top of the heap with Abbot & Costello a close second.
My personal favorite comedies are:
