It is actually best not to overlay any Windows OS with any Windows OS. Many times there will be glitches that spring up because something became corrupted.
Best practice: Save all personal information, copy all hardware drivers if you don't have the CD's for them (such as Printer, Modems, Monitor and other devices). Updated drivers that work for XP may be downloaded online from the company that made the device.
Even though 2000 and XP are very similar OSes, the main difference is XP was created to be backward compatible with Windows 98. Also, XP has many drivers preloaded for the more popular devices. Because of this, you may not need to load many of the more common device drivers, but still have a backup copy just in case.

You don't need much just as long as you got the right Hard ware that can can handle XP or 2000...But since your installing XP don't install Vista because it requires upgraded hardware....

back up the stuff you want to keep, and why are you upgrading to xp NOW? vista just came out....
when you install a new OS it deletes EVERYTHING on your harddrive

if you are just upgrading you really don't need to do much, you might want to back up and data you don't want to lose just in case, put in your xp cd and chose upgrade
