I bought my son a used PS2 to have a spare for grandma's house. It wasn't the slim it is one of the big ones. It works perfectly. It even plays movies better than his newer one. But it makes a noise, like you can hear the disc spinning. Does this mean that the unit will probably die soon??? Or(probably not a snowball's chance in ...) does that kind of PS2 just sound that way?

I purchased an old unit from a pawn shop and it made a loud spinning sound.

It last me almost 3-yrs before the laser eye burn out, my my unit was also VERY dirty inside.

My brother purchased his PS1 new when they first came out and his does the same thing..

No worries.

Depending on the PS2's position (upright, or laying) the disc might brush up against the disc tray slightly while spinning. Its nothing to worry about though. If it continues or gets worse, try putting it in its other position.

Yes it is ok

The old models though do have a tendancy of breaking down (a problem inhereted from the ps1)
