It depends upon your goal... If you're looking for obtaining an Ph.D., then the UC's are the way to go where the course work can be more theory based than application based (for engineering).

Cal Poly, SLO is primarily known as an engineering college with the emphasis on student participation and hands-on "practical" education... "Learn by Doing".

Also, if you intend to stay on the west coast... Cal Poly has a very good reputation, while on the east coast they know the UC's a little better due to their division I football/basketball teams.

Based upon my experience, the reputation of the college helps but it's up to the student to make the most of their education, including clubs, professional organizations, work experience and networking.

I graduated from Cal Poly SLO. One thing that Cal Poly emphasized was Co-op's and internships. My recommendation for all students is to sign up for practical work experience. When you're graduating and going to interviews, the work experience is a definite boost for your career. Work experience can be the differentiator between you and your fellow classmates.

I went to UC's Santa Cruz and Davis in the Eighteen Eighties. Geography substantial. The UC's are very unique colleges in California, basically an elitist college like Stanford is greater prestigious. Cal Poly SLO is a robust college even with the undeniable fact that it does not have the exclusiveness of a UC, even though in engineering it may be greater prestigious than a number of the UC's

WOW, I must have graduated 20 years ago---and had the same question. I went with Cal-poly in SLO town. I like the town so much and how it treated it's students. There is so much to do in the area from Pismo Beach, Avial Beach, Morro bay, and a host of small towns. I did have to worry about traffic or other large city problems--it allowed me the ability to concentrate on school and what i wanted to do as a person. But how it ranks against other schools-- i would say just below UC's, But then again go to each campus--look around and figure out what you would rather do for 4 years.

Depends on major.
For engineering:
(1)Calpoly SLO
(2)UC's
For other majors, in general:
(1)UC's
(2) Calpoly SLO

The saying is- The UC get students ready for graduate work and the State colleges get the students ready for careers.

I am not sure I could do it on all - but I would suggest you look up the school for their ranking at US News & World Report site on colleges http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/rankindex_brief.php to get this information. I do know that on that list UCal, Berkeley and UCLA rank above all other public institutions in California.

Good Luck!!!
