The cricket team didn't say they were British. Only English people have the right to lose the Ashes. On the other hand English cricketers have won 'Strictly Come dancing' twice - so they're obviously good at something. Maybe the next English cricket team should be made up of cast members from EastEnders and Emmerdale. Pity about Pauline; she was good at bowling googlies.

Felicity O I'm afraid you are wrong also ''Only english people have the 'right' to claim defeat of ashes'' What about the Welsh? It is england and Wales who play for the ashes! Not so long ago it was the Scots who had an identity crisis ,Now we know where we are going and it seems now ''the english'' are the ones in crisis! LOL

Okay...in the first place, the word "British" takes in a lot more territory than the word "English". England is one country in the United Kingdom---but so are Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. People from all four of those countries can say that they are British, as they are all from Great Britain: but only people from England are "English". I don't know about the winning/losing thing, but if it's true, my guess is that if they win, they want to stress it as a victory for their homeland.

Haven't really noticed that one but what is obvious is that any Celt sportsman is termed as British by the media instead of their nationality. I guess it gives us someone to cheer when the English stars are thin on the ground.

Not sure. I have a good friend from Scotland that declares that he is British and never changes his story.

By the way he does not like the English very much.

Can't say I have ever noticed the distinction.

Maybe when they say they are 'British' they mean they are specifically from Britain, as opposed to having any team members from Ireland, Scotland or Wales?

You nearly have it right but not quite -

The English always say If the Scots or Welsh or Irish are winning that they are British - If they are losing then they are Scotish or Irish or Welsh..

Yeah I have definately noticed that and there is no other answer than it is an English ego thing! Dilute the blame if we lose and take all the glory if we win!

I agree completly!! well said! CAN I JUST CLEAR ONE THING UP......IRELAND IS NOT PART OF BRITAIN!!! WE ARE AN INDEPENDANT COUNTRY! A LOT OF MY RELATIONS DIED FOR FREEDOM SO PLEASE GET IT RIGHT- NORTHERN IRISH/ NORTHERN IRELAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are so correct though, the english will say the person is from wales/scotland etc if they lose but if a person wins they make sure and highlight the player is from england!!!
