Why when I buy/wear dress shoes (Medium Width) do the sides gape?

How do I prevent this from happening? Are there a type of dress shoes that don't do this?

It sounds like you have a narrow foot. That is usally what it means when there is slack on the sides of your shoes when you walk/stand.

Wearing too wide of a shoe is not the best for the shoe or the wearer. The extra material on the sides just rubs, and that extra movement causes the material to fatigue and could cause separation at the seams or at the sole. Wearing too narrow of a shoe can cause similar results, but due to the tightness stressing the sole and the threads at the seams. Too tight of a shoe can be worse on the foot than too loose.

So my advice would be to go to a shoe store where they carry different widths in letter sizes and have someone there to measure your foot. The correct shoe will feel better and last longer than a poor fitting shoe.

go to a good shoe store and have your foot properly measured. a lot of people buy reg/med.widths find out that they really need a narrow width.
