These are general descriptions for a consumer product. The marketing and sales of a SERVICE product would not include some of these responsibilities. The exact job responsibilites -- as with any position -- are defined by the individual company.

Marketing:
In summary, taking a product from concept to the cash register. This will often involve strategizing the brand/product, developing and delivering a P&L (profit and loss) statement, overseeing product development, packaging and display materials, advertising and PR efforts, R&D and legal interface, developing in-store promotions and promotional support calendar.

Sales:
Executing and achieving the sales plan for a product at the Retail level. (Note: in the case of direct sales brands, eg, Avon, the Sales Force is also the retailer.) The Sales force makes sure that the sales objectives are met, addresses any issues with shipments, in-store displays and position, store-tagged advertising, etc., negotiates for inclusion in the store's special events, brochures, flyers, etc., works with the store to determine the best possible display/sales environment.

Marketing & Salesmen- To know the product and or service and those consumers of which rely or need or may need that product or service and how to sell (market) that product or service to them. The salesmen job also includes making sure that their clients always have that service or product in stock or are satisfied with that service or product, also solving problems that arise when a customer has a problem with said service or product. You know there are books on this at the library.
