Flies are actually able to detect both airborn and solid sources of odour. Flies use sensitive hairs and antennae on the outer surface of the body, these are known as chemo receptors, they are quite efficient at detecting airborne odours.
Flies also have what are called tactile receptors which actually allow them to taste (related to smell) with their feet. These chemo receptors allow the fly to taste what it is standing on, and lets it know whether it is good to eat or not.

So, to answer your question, yes they can.....

Hope this helps!
