The second site has several songs (you would need to get the lyrics) which should be suitable. I like U2's "Do You Feel Loved?"

The Decemberists have really great lyrics for that. Their song Red Right Ankle (it's not the best example, just the one I can think of) has really poetic lyrics.

mrs. potter- counting crows, or almost anything by them. you could also use curse of curves( that's alliteration right in the title), or anything by panic! at the disco, but be careful w/ their stuff.. some of it can be considered offensive. good luck! (remember- anything w/ rhyme in it and a rhymical pattern has poetic devices, so you can really pick almost anything)

I would have said "The End" but it has some innaprorpiate themes.
Try "Riders on the Storm" or "L.A. Woman" by the Doors they are packed full of similes, metaphors, imagery, and symbolism.

look in songs by Tupac. he also wrote poetry. He's good for alliteration, rhythm, allusions. go for his less violent stuff especially from the mahkavi album. Mariah Carey's old stuff is good to . her love songs are written beautifully. good luck.

Well, we had a "Listening Test" for english once and they put Ashlee Simpson's "Shadow" for us to analyse. There were metaphors, smilies, etc. in it. For a practice test, we also listened to Yellowcard's "Only One".

I'll give you a little bit of an example. You probably couldn't use this for school unless you edited it a bit, but it uses a lot of poetic devices. You can find them in just about any song if you look hard enough.
"Needles" by System of a Down
I cannot disguise,
all the stomach pains
and the walking of the cranes (Assonance [repeated vowel sounds in pains, cranes as well as in many of the following lines' ending words)
when you, do come out
and you whisper up to me
in your life of tragedy
But I cannot grow
till you eat the last of me
oh when will I be free
and you, a parasite
just find another host
just another fool to roast
cause you
my tapeworm tells me what to do
you
my tapeworm tells me where to go
Pull the tapeworm out of your ***, HEY
Pull the tapeworm out of your ***, HEY
Pull the tapeworm out of your ***, HEY
Pull the tapeworm out of your ***, HEY
I cannot deny
all the evil traits
and the filling of the crates
when you, do come out
and you slither up to me
in your pimpin majesty
but I cannot grow
till you eat the last of me
oh when will I be free
and you, a parasite
just find another host
just another stool to post
cause you
my tapeworm tells me what to do (tapeworm, tell, to: alliteration or repeated beginning consonant sounds)
you
my tapeworm tells me where to go
Pull the tapeworm out of your ***, HEY
Pull the tapeworm out of your ***, HEY
Pull the tapeworm out of your ***, HEY
Pull the tapeworm out of your ***, HEY
Pull the tape worm out of me...
I'm just sitting in my room
with a needle in my hand
waiting for the tomb
of some old dying man
sitting in my room
with a needle in my hand
waiting for the tomb
of some old dying man
cause you
my tapeworm tells me what to do
you
my tapeworm tells me where to go
Pull the tapeworm out of your ***, HEY
Pull the tapeworm out of your ***, HEY
Pull the tapeworm out of your ***, HEY
Pull the tapeworm out of your ***, HEY
HEY, HEY, HEY, HEY
The whole song uses a metaphor. The parasite or tapeworm represents a drug addiction. My tapeworm tells me what to do can be interpreted as my drug addiction controls my life.
"But I cannot grow
till you eat the last of me
oh when will I be free"
This is the desperation someone with a drug addiction feels. He feels he needs the drug, but he wants to be free.
Pull the tapeworm out of your *** basically means get rid of this parasite. Get over your drug addiction.
"I'm just sitting in my room
with a needle in my hand
waiting for the tomb
of some old dying man"
This means that he knows he will eventually die just like any other drug addict.
