I work with fruit flies... as part of my genetic experiments. I've discovered that Drosophila can live almost anywhere, in wet sponges, in sink drains, on instant mashed potatoes, on onions, garlic, on rotting potatoes, etc. yes, they could live on the carrots or kale but unlikely to complete an entire generation. Remember from egg to adult takes 10 days. So if you interrupt the life cycle within the 10 day span, you will destroy them. Are you sure that they are propagating or just being attracted from outside? I would start with looking in the drain.. check your vegetable stash and root vegetables. If they are coming from outside there's not much you can do except close the windows or put up screens...they are pretty small and can pass through screens though. If they are in the house you can catch them with a jar (better yet, a snapple bottle) filled with wine vinegar or orange juice. they will go in there but not be able to come out, and they will drown. good luck and let me know if i can help

Buy one of those sprays that kills ALL flying insects. It affects their nervous system and kills them with just one wiff. You'll have to remove your rabbit for a while, but it's not really dangerous to mammals or humans.
Spray around the room in a circle. Close the door for an hour.. voila... no more flying ANYTHING. Don't ya just love modern science.

-Buy a dehumidifier for your basement
-close the toilet lid when not in use.
-hide anything moist in the kitchen.
With no water, they will find better places to live
