G'day,

Legally, you have to swipe it for every single trip you have taken on the public transport. Just be careful that you do not "accidently" bent the card, since it will damage the card and you will lose your card's validity.

Good luck.

The ticketing system on trams is seriously screwed up. The tram operators say that you MUST put your ticket in the machine every time.

But, if you buy a ticket on board the tram, then you don't need to validate it, and in fact the validation machines will reject it when you try to do it.

With the monthly ticket, once you have put it in the machine once it will have a date stamp on it, and thats what any ticket inspector will look at. As far as I know, as long as it has a date stamp for sometime in the future, it constitutes a valid ticket.

The only reason to keep putting it in the machines on trams once it has a date stamp on it is to help the tram company keep track of how many people its carrying, as others have suggested.

It's up to you, but the recommended answer is yes. Trains trams and buses have counters in them to see how many people are on them at particular times. All the information is collected so that say, if Wednesday afternoon is really really busy, they'll know that they should supply more trams at that particular time in that particular area. If you don't put your ticket through the machine each time you go on a tram, train or bus, then there will be no electronic record of your trip, which will contribute to the inefficiency of the public transport system.

You need to validate it each time you are going to the city so that you can get out of the gates and from the city to get into the gates.

Validating the tickets also gives connex statistics on how many people are using the trains on what lines at what time of the day. This is meant to improve the services. (Yeah Right!)

The tram company says you MUST validate your ticket on EVERY trip.

However, they'll never know if you don't do it.

It's up to you....but if you get stopped by an inspector you better tell them that you validated it.
