1. first make sure you know which opening you're aiming for
2. make sure you can stick your finger in there (it took me a while to find my V!)
3. then make sure your legs are spread enough (see above answers)
4. RELAX! this is very important. the muscles shouldn't be tense/tight
5. if you need to, lubricate the tampon (esp. the tip) with a bit of K-Y jelly first. you could even lubricate the opening of your vagina with the jelly too.
6. try a "Tampax Lite" for your first... they're super skinny! (i think the skinniest ones on the market) also, i like these instead of the plastic applicators, because the "petal" tips on the plastic ones can poke you and hurt. Tampax's cardboard applicators have smooth tips, and you can put a bit of the K-Y on there to make it even smoother.
what exactly is not "working"? could you elaborate a bit, and i'll try to help you. :)

I had the same problem and I did a lot of research but it's really not that bad. Just relax while you are doing it, try not to freak out if you don't get it a first. Lubricate the tip of the tampon, if you don't have ky jelly then saliva works too. Use a mirror to find the right opening and stick it in pointing to the small of your back. It should glide in then once the plastic part is as far as you can go, push in the tampon and remove the applicator. If you are a virgin, then you might have a tight squeeze in which try to turn yourself one first, masturbate if you have to. That will help open the hole.

When i tried following directions on the pamplet in eth box I had troubles too. But I found if yuo just bend your knees slightly so you are in a small squat it will slide in easier. Also Playtex with the plastic applicator works better than those cardboard applicators.

Have you tried standing up with one foot on top of the toilet? Also try the kind with plastic applicators.

The advice the other girls gave you is on the money but also remember that your vagina is at an angle so you have to insert it tilted towards the back a little.
