i know the story very well, but why is the movie titled alpha dog, and what is alpha dog?

Simple. The term "alpha" anything is a term that is very commonly used in nature to refer to the specific member of any group of animals who is very obviously the "leader" or "ruler" of the group because they exhibit the most agression, dominance, intelligence etc. They usually cannot be taken over by anyone other than another "alpha"
From the dictionary:
"Alpha--Being the highest ranked or most dominant individual of one's sex with regard to social animals." So therefore.. an Alpha Dog, would be the leader of a pack of male dogs and the character of Johnny is this case is clearly the "alpha dog" or leader of his "pack" because he calls the shots and gives out the orders for everyone else to follow. Alpha Dog or Alpha male come from the greek "Alpha" witch is the first letter of the alphabet "a" it is a term used to describe the leader of the pack

An alpha male is a dominant and aggressive man. I think the movie was named alpha dog, because wild dogs are among if not the most vicious killers. So the title seems to imply the viciousness of the male who sets up a young boy up to murder him.

An alpha dog is the top dog or leader of the pack. Have no idea why the movie you mention was so named.

The alpha dog is the top dog in the social ladder in a group of people or animals.
I dont' know why they named the movie that since I really don't know much about the movie, sorry.

Alpha is the leader of the pack, who gets to the top through a show strength or force. It is just marketing as to the name choice, as it hits at male struggle and violence.

in case you truly watched the finished action picture you would see that the three suspects ended up in detention midsection and the 15 year old boy were given shot to death. Johnny truelove moved to Italy yet they discovered him.
