Volume is defined as the amount of space taken up by a three-dimensional object.
Volume often refers to liquid volume, which is defined as the amount of space taken up by a liquid, which spreads completely to fill its container.
There several devices used for measuring volume:
measuring spoons - tablespoon, teaspoon, 1/2 teaspoon, 1/4 teaspoon
measuring cups
graduated cylinders
beakers

If a is length of a line segment,
Then the area of the square formed with side a is axa= a^2.
Given an irregular shape we can always count the number of small unit squares of size a^2.
If we count n numbers then the area of the given shape is n x a^2.
Now we can form a cube with each side equal to a.
There are six sides for the cube and each side has an area a^2.
We take n = 3 such cubes and arrange in a line.
Again there are 6 sides. 4 sides are having each an area of 3 a^2 and two sides are having an area of a^2.
The two sides of the top surface are 3a and a; the vertical side has side of a.
Multiplying the three we get 3 a^3.
But the number of cubes is 3 only.
We take 9 cubes and arrange them in a 3x3 rows (or columns)
Again there are 6 sides; the top and bottom has an area 9a^2 whereas the other 4 sides are having area 3 a^2.
The top side has sides 3a and 3a where as the vertical side has a side of a.
Multiplying the three we get 9 a^3.
9 is the number of cubes we took.
Now we take 27 cubes and arrange them in a huge cube of each of side 3a.
The top side has two sides of side 3a and the vertical side has a side of 3a.
Multiplying the three we get 27a^3.
Thus, if we multiply the there lengths or one length and the perpendicular area we get the number of cubes in it.
We can extend this to any shape.
The number of unit cubes in a given object is called volume.
The number depends on the size of the cube we take for reference.

It either means level of loudness or the amount of space contained within an object. For example, a 10" x 10" x 10" box will hold 1000 cubic inches of whatever - blocks, water, sand, etc.
