Call a stockbroker - the values is based on type of stock as well as initial issue - AT&T has reordered several times and many of the older stocks were reissued or canceled entirely - so only a broker can confirm the value of an old stock.

I'm guessing around 40,000 the stock has split 3 times since 1987, so 100 shares from 1987 is now 600 at 34.00 a share, so since 1987 that is over 20,000 alone prior to that I do not have the data.

I pulled the historical data from AT&T's investor relations site:
http://www.att.com/gen/investor-relations?pid=7722&cdvn=stockinfo#report

3/3/1964, the high was 143.50.

I plugged this info into a portfolio on Yahoo finance with the purchase date of 3/3/1964

According to my portfolio, you would be about -$10,877 in the hole. The stock is only worth $34.73...taking into account all the splits....you're a poor man!

If it is AT&T INC 7% PINES (NYSE:SBT), then each share is valued at $25.25, as of January 12. So for 100 shares they would be worth $2525.00
