find the common denominator and that’s 40

?/40 = ?/40

find out how many times 8 goes into 40 that’s 5 so multiply 1 times 5 and that’s 5 so that becomes 5/40

do the next one how many times does 5 go into 40 = 8 so multiply the numerator which is 1 by 8 and u get 8/40

add them and u get 13/40

1/8+1/5 = 5/40 + 8/40 = 13/40

1/8(5/5) + 1/5(8/8)
5/40 + 8/40
= 13/40
