awhile ago, and we have been avoiding/ignoring each other. Recently a situation/problem at work developed whereas I had to speak with him via email. Like the situation happened out of the blue and it involved him of all people.

The work situation brought you together again. It did not bring you back to a perfect stage of a past relationship.
You will have to be more careful in future so misunderstandings do not occur.
A past is never instantly forgotten. The contact proves his good manners in handling the situation as it should be handled.
Don't go making a big issue about it and reading things into it...you will be disappointed and get angry again.
Its not easy to heal past misunderstandings, and respect has to be earned
