I think the last 4 elections are the only ones which should be counted.
Alabama, Alaska, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Mississippi, Nebraska, N. Carolina, N. Dakota, Oklahoma, S. Carolina, S. Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming are the states which consistently voted Republican in all of the last 4 elections. Red.
California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin are the state which consistently voted Democrat in all of the last 4 elections. Blue.
These states voted 2 or 3 times for one party and once or twice for the other party, so these states are kinda purple.
Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
{I get thumbs down??? Why, for being too accurate??}

Very few states fall into either category. A look at blue and red counties shows that cities tend to be blue and everywhere else tends to be red.
That being said, most of Wyoming and Utah are red, while most of Massachusetts and Connecticutt are blue.
Beside a few other exceptions, most of the other states fit in neither category well.

The red states are those where the people believe in life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The red states are where people with similar beliefs as those of the Taliban live.
