Please tell me why. I think Norton because they have been around longer and have a better team.

Neither. Norton only slows your system down and has bad percentage in catching viruses, etc. McAfee is SIMPLY a disaster. Do not even let the software anywhere near your hard drive. It has a tendency to never go away, even after you uninstall it. The BEST anti-virus and all around protection (excluding firewall, however you can also buy a version with firewall as well) is Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 This baby is light, won't bog down your computer and has THE BEST percentages out there for catching everything malicious. Really. It's the Best.

Kaspersky

While Norton can be very good, it can also be a bit proprietary. McAfee is a great antivirus and many companies are using it. Norton is good for home use. You also might want to look at Trend Micro. Another business class anti virus

If those are your only 2 choices, you are in trouble. That said, I'd use Norton over McAfee as McAfee doesn't do anything but eat CPU cycles and Memory. Otherwise, I'd recommend pretty much anything else. AVG is continually rated highly. NOD32 is good, Kaspersky is solid, Malwarebytes with the resident module is probably among the best. But avoid WinCLAM, it's very slow and doesn't get updated much.

McAfee will catch almost all viruses but as another said, once you have McAfee, to uninstall it you must contact McAfee! It will not uninstall by itself and windows cannot get rid of it. Norton and McAfee have changed the last few years. McAfee use to be the absolute best but they lost a few of their best programmers to higher paying Microsoft. Now instead of keeping the customer by having the best, they try to keep them by not allowing an uninstall unless you contact them! I have heard of the other Korsiki or whatever that name is. I think it is now the best but have not tried it. God bless. Earl

First of all neither AV is perfect beyond that it is more a matter of preference. I have used both and have had alot of problems with Norton interfering with system functions and programs. I have also had to remove Norton from several friends computers for similar reasons. I personally only use and recommend to my friends McAffee. I have not had any problems with it.

Norton is better than McAfee, but in my experience, AVG is better than both.
