All of the previous answers offer good info....an example from my business follows which is more "real life"

When you sign the application & write a check for insurance from me.....THAT is sales!!

A week later when I send you a card thanking you for your business w a free long distance card attached...THAT is marketing.

Sponsoring a local youth sports team is marketing.

Being active in a local charity or the chamber of commerce is marketing, tho I never try to actually sell anything.

Anything which portrays you or your business in a positive way is a form of marketing.

Hope this helps!!

Marketing are the tactics that a company uses in order to drive sales. Some examples of marketing include paid advertising (print, online, radio, tv, billboards), direct mail, exhibiting at appropriate trade shows and taking advantage of speaking/press opportunities. The end goal of marketing is to generate awareness for the product/service being advertised and to ultimately make it easier and/or generate leads for the sales people. Sales and Marketing are two different job junctions, though they're certainly related..

In simple terms, the marketing function is there to interest potential customers in a business message, provide leads for the sales function and add perceived value to the activities of the business. Sales exists to convert potential customers into actual business, to maximise revenue from a customer and to create a relationship between customer and business (through account/relationship management).

In reality, many companies blur the lines between sales and marketing, intentionally or otherwise, often to create better sounding jobs or because the business is driven by short-term goals and tactics, not longer term strategies. For many reasons, sales is seen as the 'dirtier' function, although this should not be the case. Marketing is often seen as the more 'woolly' function since qualitative and quantitative results are traditionally harder to come by.

There are many specialisms in both areas - direct marketing and direct sales being two examples.

Hope that helps.

Marketing is an all-inclusive term that encompasses all aspects of getting a product from the factory to the end consumer. Some aspects of Marketing include packaging, pricing, advertising, SALES, promotions, public relations, sponsorships, distribution, etc.

Sales is specifically a process by which the seller tries to influence the consumer to purchase his product or service. Sales can include advertising, public relations, promotions and other factors...but does not usually enter the picture until the market research, product development, manufacturing, packaging, and distribution functions have all been handled.

Hope that helps!

Sales: The exchange of goods or services for an amount of money or its equivalent; the act of selling.

marketing: The commercial functions involved in transferring goods from producer to consumer.

so basically selling is actually the exchange of cash for product and marketing is all the advertising and promotion of the product before it sales.

Marketing is a process while sales is the outcome.
Improve your marketing and you can improve your sales.
Two can co exist or be independent depending on how you structure your sales and marketing system.

Although related, they are different. Marketing is responsible for formulating strategies that communicate the benefits of the product/service being offered for sale. Sales then implements those strategies with potential customers.

Sales is the science of selling a specific product or products. Marketing is the science of exposing the business that manufactures a product or products, also the products can be marketed by describing the manufacurer or distributor of them through advertising.
