sure it's a sport. personally i like ice hockey better, but field hockey is, though it doesn't always look it, quite a tough sport. a lot of running around, chasing the ball with a stick and trying to score. i tried it, thinking it would have been easy, but it wasn't! it's a real sport and don't let anyone convise you otherwise!
what makes a sport a real sport you ask? well, it has to be physical for one, and i think a real sport aught to be tireing as well, like (ice/field) hockey, basketball, baseball,... even soccer. games wherein you give all you've got and which completely exhausts the players. stuff like that!

Of course field hockey is a sport, and those who say it isn't probably have never played field hockey in their life. In North America, if you say Hockey you mean ice hockey, but in most of the world, it would mean field hockey. I consider it a sport because it is physically demanding (I played all positions and mid-field was the harshest), it requires a great amount of skill, and is very competitive. As for the 'uniforms', yes women's teams still wear the skirt (which is more of a tradition), but the guys have always worn shorts.

Oh, and if they still say it isn't a sport, give them a crack on the shins with the stick.....they'll come around quickly!!

Field hockey is totally a sport. I mean, it's not that cool of a sport in North America for guys to play, we should stick to real hockey. But I know alot of girls who play it, including my sister who plays on her highschool team and is being recruited by some bigtime universities. Of course it's a sport. Its just as physically demanding as soccer and is really much cooler.

The only problem I have with field hockey, is that as it grows in popularity, and because Americans are Americans it is leading to hockey being increasingly called ice hockey, and that is just plain redundant.

yeh field hockey is a sport and most likely more strenuous than ice hockey. I understand that the US both men and women's teams aren't ranked very high in the world but if you watch a team like australia who are currently ranked in the top 2 of the world, you will see it is quite a tough sport.

those guys are idiots. of course it's a sport, just like ice hockey is a sport. there are school teams and national teams and everything. a sport is a sport when there are teams and people love to play it and it is widespread. there is often special equipment.

No, there really isn't any organization to it. its a field thrown together and they make up rules as they go. Every ref has his/her own philosophy. Ice hockey is a sport for one reason. Organization. Every one everywhere plays by the same rules. not true with field hockey.
