They were the first band to bring grunge to the mainstream, not to mention all underground music at the time (along with REM). It is safe to assume that if Nirvana didn't release Nevermind, most of the 90's great music never would have become popular. They were kind of just looked at as the spokesmen for the grunge movement, but there are a few others who get about as much credit as them (Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden).

"grunge" was a label that MTV gave Nirvana and the rest of the bands that marched behind them. Really, this was punk rock. You can trace the influences all the way back to Johnny Cash.

Nirvana gets the credit for it, but it was started by less popular bands like Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone. There would have been no Pearl Jam if not for Mother Love Bone.

Alice In Chains, Mother Love Bone, Green River, and Nirvana all started around the same time - late 80s

The oldest most famous band I know is sonic youth, the pixes, the screaming trees, mudhoney....I am only 25 though and only really knew Nirvana, Soundgarden, e.t.c....Pearl Jam are not grunge...

Eric said it first.. Neil YOung is considered the godfather of grunge..But, I don't consider Neil grunge, he is more Folk, just that some of his stuff is more electric and harder rock...

Nirvana was the first to become popular...I think one of the first was Mother Love Bone or Sonic Youth...
