Sudoku is good brain exercise. Here are some tips for a system that will get you progressing to the "tough" levels:
First, pick a line or square and fill in the blanks with EVERY possible number that could go there. Say if 4 of the nine boxes in a square are already filled with 1, 2, 3 and 4, then any of the blanks could be 5, 6 , 7, 8 or 9 MINUS any of those 5 numbers that might be in vertical or horizontal line with each blank. So each blank could have from 1 to 5 numbers written in it (write small.) Go through and do this for all the blanks in all nine squares.
Now look at any one block or line of nine where you've written in the choices. Is there a number that only appears ONCE in all the groups of numbers you've written in the blank squares? If so, that's the number for that square -- erase the all the numbers in that square but that one. Also, are there two squares within a line or block of nine that have only TWO numbers possible and they are both the same (like 2 squares that you've written "6 or 9" or "7 or 8" in)? If that's the case, those 2 numbers can ONLY be in those 2 squares so you can erase them if you've written them in any of the other sets of possible numbers in the other blank squares within that block or line.
Also, if there are 3 blank squares in a vertical or horizontal line within a block of nine and they all have the same THREE possible numbers only (like "1,3,8" or "2,7,9") then those 3 numbers are accounted for and you can erase them as possibilities from any of the other 6 squares in that row that may be blank.
By doing this in each line and block of nine you will start to narrow down the choices for each square. Note that most of the on-line Sudokus will allow you to type multiple numbers or "notes" in each square as you work towards the final answers.
Once you've mastered regular Sudoku enough to feel bored with it, try "Killer Sudoku" where you have to also match numbers to random groups of blocks by the TOTAL of each group of numbers in the group.

love it, I start with the boxes with the most numbers, continuing with each number that I discover, when I hit a dead end I either go to the next box with a lot of numbers or a line with a lot of numbers, not exactly a pro but thats what I've found works best
