I am 40 years old and I tried tampons once, but didn't like is so I stuck with pads all these years, and I will still stick with pads until I no longer need them.
If you were my daughter, I would tell you to use whatever you are comfortable with. It is perfectly ok to wear pads.

I just don't go swimming for that week.

Well I have to say I was much the same when i first started my period. I was scared about using them too, they look scarey too i hadn't a clue how to use it either. i must have read the instructions like 5 times before i had the courage to try it out. But when i did try it out for the first time it hurt a little and u have to position it just right inside u or it can be uncomfortable. Now adays its as easy as 1,2,3. But i avoid using them unless i need to wear a skirt or go swimming etc... i usually just stick to pads. But everyone is totally different u might try it and think what was all the worry about. But as the saying goes "if u dont try, u never know". Really don't worry about it, it's totally fine if u dont like it stick to the pads no one is forcing u too use tampons. Best of luck anyway in whatever u decide.

If you're genuinely uncomfortable with wearing tampons, you don't have to wear them ever. But this means that you need to avoid certain activities while you've got your period (swimming, vigorous athletics, etc). I'm also curious why you don't want to wear them. If you've tried and find them uncomfortable, you may want to try a different brand. If you worry about them coming out or leaking, you can try wearing them with a pad as back-up at first. If you're worried about Toxic Shock Syndrome, you can stick to wearing them for only a couple of hours and never overnight. If you don't like putting them in, is it because of the dry cotton sensation, or because you find it strange or unpleasant to touch your vagina? If it's the cotton sensation, some brands of tampons are working on that. If your real problem with tampons is that you worry about breaking your hymen or losing your virginity, don't worry. A broken hymen doesn't mean anything (and can actually be sort of convenient when you Do lose your virginity), and a tampon may not actually break your hymen anyway (http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/1149.html), and you Can't lose your virginity to a tampon. If it's discomfort with touching yourself "down there" that's bothering you, please give yourself some time to think about why this is. Your vagina is part of Your body, and there is nothing wrong or dirty about it (no matter what you're doing with it).

In conclusion: You don't have to use a tampon, but why wouldn't you?

There is nothing wrong with only using pads, I used pads and pads only for 8 years, but then I was tired of not being able to swim for a week a month, so I forced myself to learn to use them. I took me quite a few times to get it so don't be discouraged and if you don't have anyone to ask, just research it on-line that what I did. But do whatever you truly want to do. If you don't like the idea of tampons, don't use them and don't let anyone make you feel bad about not using them.

The problem with wearing tampons comes when they're kept in too long... more than a couple hours, when you should have changed it normally. That's when toxic shock syndrome can happen.
If your body isn't comfortable with tampons (they feel dry, too full, can't stay inside, etc) there's no reason you *have* to wear them. Unless your gym teacher requires you to wear a tampon for swimming, or you're wearing undergarments that won't accommodate a pad.
Pads are perfectly fine, and your flow may end a little faster because it's not held back up inside you.

There's nothing wrong with using pads. It's your body and you do what you're comfortable with. But one day you may want to try tampons, they're a lot easier and less messy than pads. Still the choice is yours and no one should make you feel guilty about that. Good Luck.

i have never used tampons. I also prefer pads. I just don't feel comfortable with tampons. But stick with what you are comfortable with.

It's OK to use whatever type of menstrual product that you are comfortable using.

If you're scared that using tampons will take your virginity, then rest assured that it won't. It can't.

Some women are born without a hymen at all, But that doesn't mean that even as a newborn, they are not virgins. And women can tear their hymen by any number of activities. Unless that activity is vaginal intercourse, they are still virgins.

You lose your virginity when you have vaginal intercourse. End of discussion.

I'm 27 and I still use pads. I tried tampons, but they were uncomfortable - though I think was wasn't putting them in right.

I've put a tampon in twice in my life and I'm 16 years old. I just don't like how it gets uncomfortable, and like you I get a little scared. My sister thinks I'm crazy, but hey, I'll stick with pads just like you.

Good luck! :-)
