Can anyone edit my paper for me? I'm unsure of my conclusion and my first point.

Mark Twain once said "everyone complains about the weather, but no one does anything about it." This quote summarizes Al Gore’s apprehension about the world-wide epidemic global warming in the documentary An Inconvenient Truth. In the documentary, Mr. Gore’s comments are not entirely accurate. He makes claims that are partially correct or not correct at all in order to make his documentary more intriguing, so that it generates more revenue.

Firstly, I partially concur with Al Gore’s argument based on his claims that the polar ice caps are melting and that global sea levels could rise 20 feet (6.096m) with the loss of the ice cap in Antarctica. He is correct; however, the number would actually be a rise of 200 feet (61.1m) (Table 11.3, from Meier and Bahr (1996), Warrick et al. (1996), Reeh et al. (1999), Huybrechts et al. (2000)) if all the grounded ice melted off of Antarctica. Mr. Gore’s prediction was 180 feet (55.0m) off, perhaps a miscalculation on his part.

Secondly, I oppose Mr. Gore’s idea of the North Pole ice shelves melting by the summer of 2050. His statistics are incorrect because “even though the satellite measurements have continued for more than twenty years, they are inadequate to distinguish between changes due to long-term trends or interannual/inter-decadal variability” (Johannessen et al., 1999). In addition, “Antarctic sea-ice extent has not decreased since the late 1970s, possibly related to recent indications of little change in Antarctic temperatures over much of the continent in that period.” Therefore, it is futile to determine if this is a long term natural phenomenon, or whether this is really caused by annual changes in carbon monoxide concentration that Al Gore would like us to believe.

Lastly, I disagree that the number of major hurricanes in the United States has almost doubled in the last 30 years. “The United States record of landfall frequency and intensity of hurricanes is very reliable because of the availability of central pressure measurements at landfall.” (Jarrell et al., 1992) “Both of these data sets continue to show considerable inter-decadal variability, but no significant long-term trends (Figure 2.37, from Landsea et al., 1999).” “Furthermore, large variations of hurricane activity on interdecadal timescales have been observed in this century (Gray et al., 1997).” With this knowledge, Mr. Gore should not predict the frequency of hurricanes as hurricanes come at random.

In conclusion, I believe Mr. Gore’s accuracy fell short in this documentary and viewers were not properly informed because his statistics had flaws. Also, Mr. Gore should have spoken about the good resulting from immediate action on our behalf rather than focusing on the consequences throughout the documentary.

Look, I'm not writing this out of my amusement, I like Al Gore actually. I just disagree with his statistics. Simple as that. In no way am I saying global warming is not happening!

You bring up some interesting points. You should have mentioned the Kyoto protocol. That would have given additional credence to what Mr. Gore was saying. Further, you could mention that out of all the countries that signed off on it, the United States was one of only two countries that did not, leaving us in a serious minority. And we wonder why the world thinks we are nuts.
Sounds like you have done some research, however, you could also mention that while hurricanes cannot be predicted, you could mention two points. One, Mr. Gore's statement of predicting hurricanes could be incorrect because they are indeed random and second, the frequency and severity of hurricanes is cyclical. Which leads us to believe that they can indeed be predicted.
Oh, and this is not a really good forum for doing a school paper. You will get more bad answers than anything else. Just look at the people who ask for advice and get tons of smart assed remarks.
Good luck!

1. the 20 ft level was if a specific ice shelf in Antarctica melted. It didn't say all the ice.

2. If you look at the scientists who research the subject, there is no doubt humans are contributing. And I think the 2050 mark was in conjunction with the phenomenon where huge blocks of ice break off suddenly. He gave one example of this.

3. He didn't define what a "major" hurricane was, so this is probably just a bad, specific statistic he is using.

I'm not trying to diss you paper, but the vast majority of scientists say that An Inconvenient Truth was dead on with its science.
19 scientists watched his movie:
"all 19 climate scientists who had done so said that Gore conveyed the science correctly"

An inconvenient truth that Mr. Gore left out was that CO2 IS HEAVIER THAN AIR!!! This little item is why the Kyoto treaty is phony.
Another inconvenient truth is that growing plants take up CO2 INSTANTLY when in contact with it. CO2 is a basic plant food.
Another inconvenient truth that Mr. Gore left out is 85% of the earths surface is under water!! So the major amount of CO2 is taken up by sea plant life, algae, plankton, etc. Land based vegetation eg. trees and grasses are a minor user of CO2. CO2 cannot increase at the surface of the earth bc of all these plant forms.
Another inconvenient truth that Mr. Gore left out is the earth is not well prepared to clear CO2 from the upper atmosphere. How does CO2 get into the upper atmosphere if it is heavier than air?
An Inconvenient truth that Mr. Gore left out is jet engines burn 2-5 tons of fuel(kerosene) per hour. Each ton of fuel when burned produces 3.66 tons of CO2.
415 flights were cancelled from Fort Worth, TX. alone yesterday bc of the weather. There are thousands of hours of flights per day around the world above 30,000 ft. How long does it take for CO2 to slowly settle down out of the upper atmosphere?
An inconvenient truth is that Mr. Gore does not reveal who measured the CO2 levels, at what altitude, at what time of day or night, at what tempurature, in what season, city or rural, in how many locations. Was it behind a vehicle's exhaust pipe? Out at sea? Windy or still air? North of the equator or South of the equator? And where on earth do those smokestacks that were belching thick black smoke reside? I haven't seen that in 50 years anywhere in the USA.
The enviros exhibit much of the hysteria of the Salem witchhunters of the 16th century wherein they 'proved' the Salem witches were real and killed all that they could find!!
Not surprisingly, enviros fear and detest scientific thinking. It is too inconvenient for their cause and effect theories to hold up under scientific scrutiny.
However, if there is in fact global warming, it would be very inconvenient if it were caused by jet traffic, wouldn't it?

Former Vice President Albert Gore Jr.'s presentation in the documentary Inconvenient Truth is regarded as a excellent professional presentation on the looming crisis of "Global Warning." The name Global Warming was put forth by scientists who have tested this rising problem and clearly stated that this problem is dangerous to human survival.
Inconvenient Truth is convincing to many doubters of this problem.
Former Vice President Gore is to be complimented on his excellent presentation and distribution.
That same skepticism is needed when observing other current event.

The Antarctic ice sheet will not completely melt, even the more radical climate scientists agree with this. That is nothing but scare-mongering on Gore's part.

The wattsupwiththat article asks which theory is in hassle because of flat temperatures? the reply is the only which asserts that climate is inspired through basically one ingredient. Realists do not make the style of declare about carbon dioxide, though denialists declare that about the daylight. OM That sounds like the emails the East Angia hackers released.

I know where you could argue your points. It's a radical site - "Voluntary Human Extinction Movement" or VHEMT. You could write to the founder, Les. U Knight - you'll find his address there - or you could present your argument to the VHEMT group, where there are many very well-educated individuals who could inform you about the movie and help you with your essay.

The sire is worth looking at in any case - even if you don't agree with the philosophy of the movement, you'll find heaps of useful info. http://www.vhemt.org/
