Well, in my opinion, Scorsese is the greatest and I love his realism!

The ability to draw you in and make you believe that what you are seeing is real, even if you know in your mind that it isn't. They also have the ability to make you love and hate characters, want to fly without a plane and make you cry uncontrollably or laugh hysterically. That makes a great director.

id have to refute the idea that speilberg is a great director. the greats are: bergman, kurosawa, kubrick, welles, etc.
the qualities are innovative use of light and angles, the ability to express emotion/state of mind through action, and a good screenplay from which to work with
