If is not a service connected injury your pretty much out of luck. However if it is, and they won't help contact the American Legion Service Officer nearest you. The VFW is useless so don't try them. If your injury happened and was documented during the time of your service I would pursue it. If it wasn't good luck.

The VA is considered like going thru a Maze to get to the cheese.
It is very diffcult even with Medical Service Records available the system is so diversive that any information on a claim that fails after BVA cannot be used again. You must file new material evidence and when there is none all you have to rely on is the VA Medical Center and the Doctors reports that have very little affect to the make the claim plausible.
You must meet the qulaifications and have a well grounded claim to have any chance of getting compensated for the disbailoity that plagues you. There must be a Lexus bewteen the injury and the Service and have incurred while in service and show manifistation of this disease or injury.
Some Veterans eventually give up and yeild to the VA Bureuacrats that haunt the Veterans chances of even getting a simple 10 % Service connection which is harldy nothing.
If you served during the Wartime periods and are disbaled you can file a claim for a Pension and that is much easier to get, but at least you have somehting coming in while you continues the fight to be Service Connected.
DVA has their attorney's that also help Vetrans complete, file and pursue claims till their honored.
The bottom line is that oif you have very little evidence on your claim the odds of you getting connected are so slim that you will die before ever seeing a penny form VA/ Thats just how aweful it is.

Honey I work for our government and the best advice I can give to you is to keep on trying to get help from the VA. Have your personal physicians document that you are a veteran and have known back problems. Also get documentation from anyone that you served with stating that you hurt your back while you were enlisted. Just keep trying and eventually they will have to check into the allegations made. If you can give them dates, places, your CO's names, etc., they will be forced to check this. Also write to your congressmen, senators and your governor. You will be surprised how writing letters OFTEN to your governor will get action. Also, find out from the 1-800 operator what the toll free number is to your governor's office and call them every week and I assure you someone will get on this and get you an answer. We had a similiar problem with my Dad's benefits as all the records burned somewhere in Kansas, but after my brothers, sisters and I calling the governor's office every week for about a month, someone down there found some records and my Dad got his benefits. There are 7 of us, and persistance does pay off.

Yes if it was a service related injury it would have to be
documented. Or you're outta luck.
If thats the case I would go to a specialist to have them document it and maybe you can appeal your claim to the VA. If the doctor can prove the injury occurred during your time in service. But from what I've heard thats very hard to do and the VA never approves the claim.

There should be a Vet Center in your city where they
assist veterans with a variety of issues.
To find your nearest Vet Center, go to this site:
http://www1.va.gov/directory/guide/vetcenter_flsh.asp
And here is the general website for the Department of Veterans Affairs with other links:
http://www.va.gov
You can also write your state representatives, your congressman,
and even go to their offices with your request for assistance
in this matter and I've known several veterans who obtained help in this way.
good luck!

Try calling your local Unitedway and they will steer you to the right direction! There are many like you! Also call your local American Legion or VFW sometimes they will go to bat for you and they do lobby in Washington! My father was on his death bed and we had problems getting him help and a man at his American Legion guided my mother through the red tape to get help! All I can say is if at all possible don't let them operate, I had a fusion of 2 discs in my low back now I'm regretting it. I have a good pain management team and they have done more for me than the surgeon!

I don't understand?? If your a Vet. they will treat you. Do you mean you want money? If so, If it was not claimed
(service connected) when you got out of the military then you can forget it.

Yeah sad to say - many are helped but sometimes more than many turned away!
Thanks to changes in health care and vet benefits.....plus governmental changes thanks to BOTH parties!
