I'm not a republican or democrat but I have a gun because I have the sense to want to protect myself and my family from harm.

Of course it is acceptable. Store/restaurant/bar owners often have guns for protection, and I am sure that some of them are Democrats. I'm more than certain that some liberal homeowners own guns for protection as well.
Let's face it: There are Liberal/Democratic criminals, too. I'm sure some of them own guns.

The first answer is no. The second answer, in my opinion, is that it okay for anyone to own a gun as long as they learn the dangers and responsibilities (like keeping it in a safe place from children for example) that go along with owning one or more. If someone barges into your home and threatens to kill you, would you rather have a kitchen knife or a gun to defend yourself (especially when taking into consideration all the home invasions and older people getting mugged or beaten to death)? If you look at crime statistics, I am willing to bet that you will find that the most crimes that are committed with guns are used by people who do not legally own them - the guns are either smuggled or stolen by these particular individuals.

You can be a democrat and still support some republican policies. And you can support some republicans. The groups aren't very strict unless you interpret them to be. A lot of democrats probably own guns for hunting reasons, too.

No the Democrat party can not toss you out for owning a gun. One of my friends is a very liberal African American woman who belongs to the NRA. I am conservative and we joke allot that the NRA must not know she's a black democrat.

As long as the Democrat doesn't try and stop others from having weapons. I just have a problem with "special" people who want to be exceptions.

I voted for Bush and have 32 guns, but none are automatic.
Anyone who says you can't have a gun to protect yourself probably wants you to be helpless when he attacks...

Nope -- gun ownership is one of the rights protected by the Bill of Rights. No political parties involved here.
