I had major depression. It was almost psychosis. I had a really hard time and couldn't do much other than let it wear off. The no period thing just freaked me out even more. I would take preagnancy tests every week and just sit there and bawl waiting. I also gained 30 lbs. in just 3 months.
You couldn't pay me a million to do depo again. I like my sanity in tact.

I have just gotten off the shot and it is a great relief. I got one period throughout the 3 months, which was extremely nerve wrecking. I also gained some weight and from what I have heard other girls gain 10-30 pounds. It gives some girls severe mood swings, including mysleft, which my boyfriend hated. The worst effect I think is that it may cause infertillity later on in life. I really recomend not going on the shot, even though it is very effective and there is nothing to remember to take, the side effects are awful and I havn't met anybody who's enjoyed depo.

70% of women using Depo Provera gain weight. Almost half of the women using Depo Provera gain more than 5 pounds after one year of use. Many women gain more than 10 pounds.
Irregular, heavy, or no bleeding are common side effects of Depo Provera. After a year of use, many women stop having periods. Lack of a period becomes increasingly common with longer use.
Other side effects of Depo Provera can include headaches, nervousness, mood changes, bloating, hot flashes, decreased interest in sex, breast tenderness, acne, hair loss, and back ache.
After the last shot of Depo Provera, it can take over 6 months for the drug to leave the body. Side effects may linger until the drug is completely gone.
however i only gained about 5 lbs, (which was just water weight, wasn't noticeable!). which happened pretty much the first couple weeks after getting the shot. i was also pretty moody at first, not sure if it was because of depo or just me. lol hope this helps!

SIDE EFFECTS!!!!!!!!!!
I gained about 25 lbs in about 3 months. But then again it could have been a side effect of marriage. (Meaning I finally was happy and content, so what was a few pounds going to hurt. LOL I only weighed about 105 lbs then.)
No really there are a lot of side effects with getting the Depro-Provera shot. If you are considering this form of birth control definately consult your doctor.
And if you are thinking about later waiting to start a family, make sure that you stop taking the shot several months before you try getting pregnant, sometime as long as a year or more.
Other side effects include bloating, hair loss (sometimes a lot of it), and emotional mood swings. But the most commom side effect for me was that I had a period for ammporixmately three straight weeks, then did not have another one, until about one month after I shopped getting the shot.
And to answer the last part of your question, I do not think that a doctor (or health care provider/nurse) can adminstor a shot without first giving you a pregency test. Because even though my doctor knew that I was not pregnant, he still gave me the test. (I started the Depro shot about 4 weeks before getting married.)

Weight gain and having a period 4 months straight and then none, depression and a few others also I had tons of pregnancy like symptoms. With that said women vary and not everyone will have side effects like mine. I was very very bad on that birth control.
Thank you MrsZ for the information. I would have never been on depo had I known that. I took it in 00-03. I also found out that it helped lead me to infertility problems. It took 5 years for my hormones to go back to normal as well which I was never told but I read up on it and the class action lawsuit that Depo caused Osteoporosis was true. I am now 11 weeks and 1 day prego with first child. It now says it can take 6 months to a year or longer for your hormones to go back to norm. Oh if I would have known sooner.

I was on the depo for five years and I loved it, I never had any problems at all. I got it quite often without the pregnancy test first, which always freaked me out too. Anyway, I'm still not sure why so many people dislike the depo, I never had any side effects. The only reason I switched from depo to the pill is because my doctor freaked me out by saying that she really didn't want to give me anymore shots because there weren't enough tests done on the effects of depo after five years.

Prior to a Deo shot a preg test should ALWAYS be given, always! Also a good friend of mine had breackthrough bleeding for 2 months straight, stomach pain & after 3 years off the shot is still unable to concieve, pretty normal side effects of depo. Also the makers of Depo have numerous law suit in the US against them & many countried (US excluded) no longer allow the shot, it is not as safe as we woman have been lead to believe!!!!

I've had two close friends who were on the Depo shot and they both had bad side effects. My one friend had excessive weight gain which she never had before. I'm talking about 40 pds not just a few extra pound so it was serious. The other friend had irregular bleeding and weight gain also. Thats why I would avoid the shot because all I've ever heard about it are negative comments.

Weight gain, depression, at that time I developed a urinary tract infection, that was the worst one for me because it kept coming back or never really went away in the first place. I thought something was seriously wrong with me. It cleared up a few weeks after being off the shot, coincidence maybe?
