Teachers in my county enjoy a slightly above wage rate, plus they get state pensions after 20 years and full benefits. You will never get rich being a teacher, but compared to other wages in this county, it is not a bad job at all.

A first year teacher starts out fairly low and probably has to do more work than an established teacher. They spend time developing units and building their classroom, which requires not just time, but money out of pocket. After the first few years, as you take more classes and move over on the pay scale, things look better. There is a lot of stuff that we do at home but I think other professions also do things off the job. We do only work 9 months a year as well. No one I work with went into teaching for the money, most do it because they really want to make a difference in a child's life. If we paid teachers a much higher salary people would go into teaching for the money, which might not be a good thing. Do I want more money? Yes. Do I get up every morning happy to do what I do? Yes! I am one of the few people I know who are happy to go to work every day.

Teaching salaries are never enough compared to other professions; however, urban school teachers make more than those in the suburbs (in my state).
I'm not really complaining at all about my salary because I've been dirt poor before teaching. Having the ability to pay bills in full and not thinking twice gives me restful sleep.
My career is not an easy one, but very rewarding! :)

I have 20 years experience and a Master's degree, so my salary is not too bad. The problem is that I must keep taking classes (6 credit hours) every 5 years to renew my certificate. That gets to be really expensive. I don't know of any other profession where you must pay for your own education to keep your job once you have been working there for 5 years.

The salary is not the best by far. I always say that I never became a teacher for the money. Also the perception that other people have about teachers is really annoying.

There is not enough money to pay for all we do, between paperwork, grading, teaching, counseling, mothering, nursing, encouraging, loving, caring, planning, developing, refining, redirecting, re-teaching, and others no amount will be adequate (unless we go to 6 digits...of course). But our kids are worth every penny we are underpaid. They are the reason why we still do what has been underpaid for so many years, and loving every minute of it.
