As indicated in the answer by lalala.
If you use it frequently, you can add buttons for subscript and superscript to the toolbar by doing the following:

In the tan area to the right of the existing buttons at the top, right click and choose Customize (at the bottom)

Select the Commands tab

In Categories (left box) select Format.

In Commands (right box) scroll almost to the bottom and you'll see subscript and superscript

Click and hold on them one at a time and drag them to where you want them in the tool bars.

They are now quickly available any time you want them.

Type it in: H20
Then highlight the 2 and then click on "Format" at the top, then "Font" and then you can check the box for "Subscript"

Same thing for Superscript

If you don't want to remove your hands from the keyboard:

Turn Subscripts on/off with ctrl- = (equals key, usually next to backspace)

Turn Superscripts on/off with ctrl- + (SHIFTED equals key)

Works on M$ Word, too!
