Grog of the Cave Bear Clan was dubbed "first discoverer of America" by the ape-like elders of the tribe in the Year 36,563 BC for being the first to cross the Bering Strait ice bridge in search of wooly mammoths....

Before the americans discovered Columbus in 1492, the norse (vikings), celts, and other people of the north often went north to fish. This sometimes took them to the iceland, the greenland (which they named backwards to keep people away from their fishing spots) and the lands beyond. there, they found people already living there who didn't have much the fisherman wanted to trade for.

The native americans have many legends on how THEY arrived. It's a very Eurocentric thought to think europeans discovered america... when it was already inhabited by people with massive civilizations. History would have been a lot different had not Cortez been welcomed into the aztec lands at the time of a prophecy... there was NO way he would have survived a battle if outside the gates.

In short, there were many native peoples living in america in the times before hand, but their cultures were erradicated. Hopi legend is the closest thing I've found, describing the flight from the lands in the east across a series of islands in boats to this world. If you think they couldn't have built such boats... once again you are underestimating the validity of other cultures ingenuity. (The beiring straight theory is less likely, and though in my opinion, should be shot, I suppose IS technically possible, though highly unlikely).

The end.

America was actually discovered by Chinese explorer Zhao Wen in 1421. Many historians dispute this claim and say that Columbus did, others say Leif Ericson discovered north America. We may never know for sure, but the book that I'm linking to gives a lot of information that supports China's claim.

Christopher Columbus did not reach the mainland of North America in 1492. Not until 1498, on his third voyage.

The Vikings are attributed with "discovering" it, though yes, there were people here that had crossed the land bridge and I would think there were southerners, too.

Of course most textbooks will say Columbus or the Vikings, but the Native Americans were In American long before either of them came. Theories state that they came from Asia using the "land bridge" which then existed connecting Alaska to Siberia (now know as the Bearing Straight). They were the first to discover America

The natives. They crossed the land bridge to get to the Americans. But if you mean explores then Leif Ericson did but Columbus gets more credit because history books tell everyone Columbus discovered America. Not true.

By the way Leif was Norwegian-Icelandic. Born in Iceland but his family was from Norway. Banished from Norway.
