It depends on if you want a stadard tuner, or a HD tuner.

The tuner I have for regular cable is a DIAMOND PVR550RCPCISB. It does a very good job, but I've had it for awhile, and the location I bought it (newegg.com) doesn't seem to have it anymore.

One thing that was important for me, is that the tuner has a processor on board which encodes the video, so that your computer's processing power isn't taken up being pretty much dedicated to it while recording. "On-Board Hardware Encoder"

I'd go here: http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp?SubCategory=47&name=Video-Devices-TV-Tuners

and pay attention to the reviews of users. At least, the ones that sound knowledgeable.

You will have to choose between standard def and HD. There is nothing internal you can use, because laptops don't support that kind of thing. Probably the best you can get would go into a PCMCIA port. I don't know if they make anything like that, though. Bt for a laptp only, it's probably a better alternative than USB, because it will save you a port.

Hauppauge is the best brand but I'm not sure if they have external tuners for notebooks.

Edit: here's some I found that you can use.
