They are a hoax, though a very elaborate and well done hoax. I've watched the technique, and they're very thought out.

The first answer on here- hoax! It's everywhere!
As for crop circles I'm not naive to think that in this huge, vast universe, we here, on Earth are the only ones, whether crop circles are formed by aliens I have no idea, but there have been many claims of people seeing aliens, I'm not saying I believe every story or picture, but I do believe there's something out there!

The crop circles themselves are quite real. The effort to explain them as coming from aliens or beings of light is, however, an elaborate hoax. People make crop circles.

Not willing to say one way or the other.
However, some people have admitted to creating hoax circles.
As for the alien thing, some people believe that crop circles are created by terrestrial spiritual/god-like forces, others claim they have been able to call crop circles into existence by sitting round in a group meditating on an image.
Maybe they're all f*cking wackos, who knows.

Hoax I believe. There have been many documentary films on the subject all of which seem to have debunked the reality of crop circles as human endeavors.

Personally, I think that some are hoaxes, just to get attention somewhere. I think some aren't, though. I haven't a clue if it's 'aliens' or our future generations, or even our government who's making them, though. Here's a neat site that I found the other day...it has pics and even goes by country with these things.

Definitely a hoax. There have been numerous investigations into this by scientists and journalists.
Every one of them has been concluded as a hoax.

Hoax.
I saw a documentary on (I think) Discovery Channel. They used the plank & rope method described in Nick R's answer.

They're made by three guys with planks of wood with string attached. They walk in the crops stepping on the planks to keep the crop from standing back up. They have tape of them doing this.
