In some country, you can search by giving the identity ( name and identity number ) and pay a search fee to the Registry of Marriages. They will be able to give a print out. Even if the person is married before.

I am not exactly sure but maybe you can do a search on them on the internet and find out that way... Why would you not want to ask them anyway?
